Sundown Social Club // 07 – Thinking By Hand, Paper Crochet Workshop

February 6 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

€40,00

Sundown Social Club is back!

For our 7th Sundown Social Club, we invite you to kickback with Studio D-ja for a night of unwinding and crocheting with … paper?

That’s right! When we first saw Helsinki based designers Studio D-ja’s newest project En Edit, which focuses on reimagining the medium of paper in all it’s multitudes, we were amazed at the diverse world of paper that existed beyond our daily use. Depending on its weave, density, and form you could have something light and delicate reformed into a light fixture, or tight and taught making it waterproof. As a Plastic-free business (and overall Plastic Haters) seeing how D-ja uses Paper in functions where synthetics have now become commonplace, inspired us and we knew we had to collaborate!

Our most recent workshop with Danielle Yukari, was making Cha Ze (tea scoops) out of clay, however the original Cha Ze in the ChaoZhou Gong Fu tradition was, you guessed it a piece of Paper. Part of the reason for it’s use was not only because in it’s simplest form the paper does not add or subtract from the tea, but it also provides the purest and thinnest form to interact with the tea by touch – you can feel the weight, the density, the quality of the tea, all through the paper. And even nowadays Kaishi paper is an integral part of Japanese tea ceremony.

Did you know that your hands have their own way of thinking and muscle memories? Through touch, you were born to sense the physical world—its weight, temperature, softness, durability, textures, and even the humidity of every object and material.

We invite you to a join our cozy evening workshop to relax and explore paper with your hands. In this workshop, Studio D-ja will be guiding you in crocheting a 9x9cm tea mat from paper yarn (no previous experience with crocheting needed). There will be two types of raffia paper yarns sourced by D-ja from Taiwan and China. Both are crafted using 100% natural wood pulp, showcasing the unique aesthetics and properties of East Asian paper. These yarns are hand-washable, durable and soft – perfect for crocheting and gentle on the skin.

Nari will also be serving tea throughout the evening including our Taiwanese Oolongs and low/non caffeinated teas. We look forward to a fun night together!

About Nari X En edit

Nari

In classical Japanese, Nari literally means “To Be”. “Heaven, Earth, Human in Harmony (天地人和)” is the driving philosophy of Nari. For us this manifests in better being with nature, being with others, and being with ourselves.

En

En derives from the Chinese character  (yuán) with its Japanese pronunciation. This nuanced word refers to a serendipitous, destined connection rooted in East Asian philosophy. It conveys a sense of bonds, encounters or relationships that feel naturally meant to be. Through our curated design products and workshops, we invite meaningful connections with our new friends and the old.
