We’re super excited to announce our next collaboration – a personalized Tea Scoop and Cup making workshop with the ever talented Japanese-Brazilian artist Danielle Yukari.
The Cha Ze (茶则) or Tea scoop is an incredibly personal tea tool used for weighing, holding, analyzing, and showcasing your favorite teas before brewing. If you’ve been following us for a while you’ll know we’re lovers of Gong Fu Style of brewing, and if we go back to the roots of Gong Fu in Chao Zhou, we find that the OG Cha Ze is a simple piece of paper. While its purpose hasn’t changed, its form has developed into a vehicle for personal expression and style.
We’ve had the idea for a while for a Cha Ze making workshop, and we were patiently waiting for the right person to work with, but when we met Danielle Yukari and saw her work we knew we found our match. Yukari, is an artist, researcher and educator, who has a special ability to imbue her works with a natural joyful liveliness without sacrificing functionality.
In this 2,5 hours workshop, you will make your own Tea Scoop as well as your own Tea Cup to accompany it. We will begin with a gong fu tea session where you will see the Cha Ze in action, while also drinking a tea to get the creative juices flowing for the session ahead.
Yukari will then guide you through the following steps to make your very own personalized tea scoop and cup through:
– drawing/making paper pattern
– making clay slab. Use of inlay and marble techniques to create patterns and drawings on the clay slab. Use of dark brown and light beige clays
– tracing, cutting, shaping the clay slab in a tea scoop shape
– pinch pot technique to make teacup with foot
We will be serving various teas throughout this workshop. This workshop is suitable for adults with some or no experience in ceramics, that are interested in tea rituals and their process.
Yukari will fire the pieces after the workshop, so each person will have one tea scoop and one tea cup as a final piece that can be picked up at Nari Tea after 12 Dec.2024.

About Danielle Yukari
Danielle Yukari is a Japanese-Brazilian artist currently based in Helsinki, Finland.
Her work explores the craft and the repetitive gestures involved in the ceramics practice or in any other craft activity, with the production of functional objects that often feel like sculptures and sculptures that can be repurposed into practical tools.
Yukari’s research includes frames from the everyday life, it is all about colors, exploring shapes and textures, landscapes, little drawings, how an artwork can activate the space it is inserted and people around it.
