A Sip of Master | Jasmine Tea Tasting

The term “Tea Master” has many uses nowadays, from a masterful tea teacher, to a masterful tea maker. But in China, only the Tea Masters that not only produce the most exemplary tea but also represent the cultural heritage of the tea are bestowed the status – “Inheritor of Traditional Tea Making”.
Which makes us all the more grateful that for this Lunar New Year, we’re collaborating with CHAxART to present the first edition of “A Sip of Master” *, featuring the tea made by the “Inheritor of Traditional Jasmine Scented Tea Making” – Mr. Bifeng Lin & Mr. Fashui Weng. These teas are so highly valued that they are reserved for a select few within China and are rarely seen outside of the country.
Jasmine flowers were introduced to Fuzhou through the maritime Silk Road around 224-651 AD. Blending/Scenting Jasmines flowers with green tea has a history of nearly a thousand years. Renowned for the harmonious fusion of tea and jasmine fragrances, The production technique is known as the “Fuzhou Jasmine Tea Scenting Process,” recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage of China.
The production process includes seven steps: levelling, shaking, treading, loosening, roasting, scenting, and lifting(scent)
Typically, during the scenting process, with a ratio of 1 pound of tea to 3 pounds of flowers, layers of tea and flowers are stacked and left to rest, with the traditional method allowing for up to nine scenting cycles. In the end, the jasmine flowers contribute all their fragrance to the tea leaves, gracefully “retiring” after their role is fulfilled.
In this session, not only we will learn the tradition of jasmine tea making, but also be able to taste the two interpretations by these two masters. Looking forward to tasting the taste of spring with you all.

“A Sip of Master” is a new series of Chinese tea sharing and tasting events co-created with CHAXART. In collaboration with master tea producers and representative inheritors of various types of Chinese tea, we present the masterpieces of respective tea categories, showcasing the highest level of Chinese tea and tea-making craftsmanship. The intention is to provide an opportunity for tea enthusiasts, professional tea sommeliers, and Chinese tea lovers in Europe to personally experience and appreciate the evolutionary legacy of exemplary craftsmanship by Chinese tea masters in the traditional handcrafting techniques passed down through generations. Through these unique tastings, we wish to also showcase how tea masters and enthusiasts through tea interpret and communicate the harmony between human and nature, seeking balance and fulfilment.
