SUMMARY:Exhibition | SEIREN 靜練 by Raphaella Wu [Tea Residency]
DESCRIPTION:SEIREN 靜練 is an ongoing project by Raphaella Wu\, exploring textiles\, craft\, and the relationships that emerge through travel and encounters with artisans. The name SEIREN also echoes the Japanese term 精練 — the process through which cloth is refined and prepared. \nEach textile arrives with a history of its own. Banshu-ori from Hyogo\, shaped through a long tradition of clothing and everyday use\, carries the softness and lightness of cotton. Damask textiles from Fukui\, by contrast\, emerged from a different relationship between cloth\, craft\, and space — appearing in tea settings\, tea utensils\, and scroll mountings\, where sheen\, shadow\, texture\, and the movement of light across the surface become part of how the fabric is experienced. \nAlthough both are textiles\, their atmosphere and presence differ greatly depending on the land and purpose from which they emerged. \nWhen these textiles take the form of shoes\, they enter another life: no longer only something to be seen\, but something worn\, moved with\, and carried from place to place. The form changes\, while traces and memories of where the cloth comes from remain. \nFirst presented in Kyoto\, SEIREN 靜練 now continues its journey to Helsinki. \nThe textiles are encountered through travel\, and through shoes\, they begin to travel again. \n \nThe exhibition runs from September 9th to 13th\, with a special opening Tea Ceremony by Ichiko Horiguchi on the 9th 17:00. Please RSVP separately. \n \nABOUT RAPHAELLA WU \n \nBased between Taiwan and Kyoto\, Raphaella Wu’s work grows from an interest in textiles and craft. \nThrough travel\, she visits textile regions and makers\, learning about local materials and techniques and bringing these encounters into her projects and exhibitions. \n

SUMMARY:SEIREN Exhibition Opening Tea Ceremony by Ichiko Horiguchi [Tea Residency]
DESCRIPTION:To open the SEIREN 靜練 exhibition\, Ichiko Horiguchi will host a tea gathering shaped by travel\, memory\, and the connections between Taiwan and Japan. \nThe selection will include Taiwanese teas\, among them Oriental Beauty\, recalling the journey Ichiko and Raphaella made through Taiwan last year\, alongside old native tree tea made by Ichiko from Mii-dera Temple in Shiga — a place closely connected to her ongoing study of tea\, nature\, and Buddhist culture. \nAccompanied by Taiwanese tea snacks\, the gathering offers an entry way to the stories and journeys behind SEIREN through tea and conversation. \n🌱🌱🌱🌱 \n \n  \nLimited participation\, please RSVP in advance. \n40€ / person. Three teas will be served\, accompanied by Taiwanese tea snacks. \nFor attendance confirmation\, we will send a payment link. \n  \n🫖🫖🫖🫖 \n \n  \nABOUT ICHIKO HORIGUCHI 堀口一子 \n \nIchiko Horiguchi 堀口一子 is a tea practitioner of 茶絲道 (Cha-su-ru). \nRooted in Chinese tea\, she has spent more than two decades studying and practicing across the tea cultures of China\, Taiwan\, and Japan\, organizing tea gatherings\, classes\, and collaborative projects along the way. Her teaching and tea practice have taken her across Japan and into China and Hong Kong\, from tea gatherings at Kyoto Art Center and Mii-dera to curating the 茶絲道 exhibition in Hangzhou\, alongside continued research journeys through Taiwan and Yunnan. Her natural tea research deepened after encountering old native tea trees growing in and around Mii-dera temple in Shiga\, where she began harvesting the leaves and making tea using techniques informed by her study of Chinese tea. This relationship with the temple has since developed alongside a deepening study of tea and Buddhism. \nThrough 茶絲道\, she continues to explore the possibilities of tea across culture\, place\, and everyday life. \n(If you’d like to learn more about the incredible story of how she found the tea\, or rather how the old tea trees found her you can read the story here.)

SUMMARY:Gaiwan Series | Foundation Class: Gaiwan Essentials (2026)
DESCRIPTION:This is part of our first class from the WAYS OF TEA PROGRAM – Gawiwan Series\,\nfor more detailed information\, please read here.\n \n3h course\, beginning with an introduction to the gaiwan’s history\, symbolism\, and design — from the classic round bowl to the distinctive “horse-hoof” form\, and from porcelain to clay\, exploring how shapes and materials influence flavor and aroma. Building on this\, the session moves into practical training in the fundamentals: how to hold\, tilt\, and pour with ease. It also introduces the basics of water lines\, pouring points\, and height — simple adjustments that can already shift the tea’s character. These glimpses serve as an entry into the more advanced techniques developed in the Master Class. \nWhat you will learn: \n\nHistory & Culture: The origins and evolution of the gaiwan\, and how it differs from Western teaware in both function and symbolism.\nForm & Material: How porcelain\, clay\, and glass affect aroma and taste; exploring shapes from the classic rounded base to the distinctive “horse-hoof” form.\nPractical Foundations: How to hold\, tilt\, and pour with ease; how to manage water lines\, pouring angles\, and height to influence flavor.\nSneakpeek for Advanced Practice: A first glimpse of zhuan cha (leaf swirling)\, showing how subtle movements already shift the tea’s character — leading naturally to the explorations of the Master Class.\nReflection: Guided tasting and group discussion on how the gaiwan can serve as both daily tool and mindful ritual.\n\n  \nPerfect for: beginners and curious tea lovers\, as well as those already familiar with the gaiwan who wish to uncover overlooked details.

SUMMARY:Gaiwan Series | Master Class: Playing with Gaiwan (2026)
DESCRIPTION:This is part of our first class from the WAYS OF TEA PROGRAM – Gawiwan Series\,\nfor more detailed information\, please read here.\n \n4 hours (3h guided practice + 1h challenge) \nIn this master class\, the gaiwan becomes a vessel for exploration\, a precise yet playful tool: every pouring point\, angle\, and swirl writes a different story in the cup.\nYou will learn to map the gaiwan like a clock — exploring pours at 6/12\, 7/5\, and 3/9 o’clock — and experience how each sets the leaves into horizontal spins\, vertical spirals\, or a steady\, anchored infusion. Through guided experiments\, the same tea reveals multiple faces as you compare outcomes side by side. We will also match techniques to tea types\, building a practical compass for brewing oolong\, black\, and pu’er.\nThe session culminates in a live brewing challenge: each participant receives a tea they have not practiced before and must apply their skills to draw out its most vivid expression. A playful\, advanced\, and highly sensory way to integrate everything learned. \nWhat you will learn: \n\nMapping the Gaiwan: Treating the rim as a clock — practicing pours at 6/12\, 7/5\, and 3/9 o’clock\, and observing how each sets the leaves into horizontal spins\, vertical spirals\, or a steady\, anchored infusion.\nFlow & Pressure: How pouring height\, angle\, and lid control affect aroma release\, mouthfeel\, and clarity.\nExperiential Practice: Side-by-side tastings of the same tea under different pouring methods\, experiencing directly how technique reshapes flavor.\nTea-Specific Strategies: Matching pouring styles to tea types — oolong\, black\, pu’er — and developing a practical compass for adapting methods.\nFinal Challenge: Each participant brews an unfamiliar tea\, applying their skills to draw out its most vivid expression. A playful\, advanced\, and highly sensory way to integrate everything learned.\n\n  \nDesigned for: those who wish to walk the path from technique to artistry\, from familiarity to mastery\,
